My New Red Dress

by Melanie White

When I heard the front door close and the car drive away, I waited for just a minute before heading to my bedroom closet.  Way in the back was the hidden box, which I pulled out and opened.  There, on top of the other clothes, was my newest dress: red with sparkles that glistened in the light.  It was as beautiful as the day I had bought it and still had the price tag on it.  I hurriedly took off my other clothes and put it on.  It felt so soft against my skin.  I couldn't wait to see what it looked like in the mirror as I had bought it without trying it on.  But before I got the chance to see myself in it, I noticed my son standing there looking at me. Before I could make excuses, he said, "Dad, I'm hungry," and headed toward the kitchen.
