The Remarkable Human Body

A couple of days ago, I injured the middle finger of my right hand.  What happened was…when I tried to leave the house, my garage door opener didn’t work.  So I did the manual release thing, and when I was pulling the garage door back down, I didn’t notice that my finger was caught in the crease…until I felt the pain.  Then I lifted the door back up, but the damage was done.  I had a deep cut in the top crease of the finger and had smashed the end of it.  (I’m typing this now without the use of that finger.)

My top priority was to stop the bleeding, which I did pretty successfully.  But then I got dizzy, so I laid down and had my son bring me some water.  I didn’t think I could drive myself to the hospital, so I called to see if my husband had left work yet.  He had.  I knew it would take him about 45 minutes to get home, so my son and I watched a show on tv while we waited for him.  In the meantime, I had my son get me a baggie of ice to put on the injured finger…to numb the pain and hopefully reduce the swelling.

When my husband got home, he looked at the wound and determined that because the cut was in the crease of my finger, it would be difficult for doctors to stich it, so we cleaned it with some alcohol, which really hurt, and he put butterfly Band-Aids on it and put some toothpicks on it as a kind of split, and then he wrapped those with some more Band-Aids.

In the meantime, I have figured out how to effectively type without the middle finger of my right hand.  I adapted to it surprisingly well.  Yesterday I took the extra Band-Aids off along with the toothpick splint.  The butterfly Band-Aids are still there.  My finger is very bruised, and there is dried blood around the cut, but it seems to be healing remarkably well.

Sometimes my body amazes me.  I tend to get down on myself about my weight, but the only thing I am really unhappy with on my body is my stomach.  I exercise and eat pretty well, but my body hangs on to the weight.  Anyway, instead of getting down on myself, I should celebrate all the great things about my body.  It is very healthy, and it allows me to move and do all the things I want to do in life.

I challenge you also to look in the mirror and celebrate everything you like about your body.  Maybe you have great hair, lovely feet, stunning eyes.  You get the idea.  Instead of focusing on all the negative things we don’t like about ourselves, let’s focus on the positive and realize that our bodies are miraculous machines!
