Complete strangers went out of their way to make Natalie Te Paa's birthday special. When her friend Claire Sara took her out to dinner at London’s Luciano by Gino D’Acampo restaurant, she tipped off the restaurant staff that it was Natalie's birthday.
But this restaurant did more than sing the traditional birthday song or offer the birthday girl a free dessert. You see, Natalie happens to be blind, so the staff looked up how to write "Happy Birthday" in Braille right on the spot without any advanced planning. They used warm liquid cocoa that they then chilled to create the special message. Restaurant manager Giovanni Galluccio indicated that this impromptu gesture was all just part of the type of customer service this restaurant offers to all their patrons.
When the plate was placed in front of Natalie, Claire encouraged her friend to run her fingertips over the dish. As she traced the words with her fingers, Natalie could hardly believe what she was feeling. In fact, Natalie said, “My mind was blank for a second and then I was like, ‘Is this in Braille? I’ve never had anything happen like that before. It was wild. They just really did go above and beyond.”
Sara recorded Natalie's reaction and posted it to TikTok. With close to 16 million views so far, lots of people clearly think that this kind act was really special. As Natalie related to TODAY, “The fact that people have responded so much and so well to it just shows how much the world needs kindness right now, how much the world needs a message of hope, needs to see people doing things and going above and beyond for each other.” And as is captioned in the TikTok video: “So take heart despite how broken the world is right now, true kindness still exists.”
