We’ve all heard about US postal employees losing it and shooting people, but what about a mail carrier who saved someone’s life?  That’s just what happened when Robert Dillon was on his route in Connecticut.  As he was driving, he noticed public works employee Edward Bomba on the ground having convulsions.  Turns out that while Bomba was directing traffic for a road crew, his heart shut down.

Noticing the man in distress, Dillon stopped to help by giving Bomba chest compressions.  According to Bomba, he had turned blue and would have died but for Dillon’s efforts.  Bomba’s wife is grateful to have her husband because she doesn’t think people usually survive what he went through.  Although Bomba had to be on a ventilator for a few days, he’s on the road to recovery.  Bomba has since called to thank Dillon for saving his life.

This story made me think about how much easier it is to make an excuse not to help than actually to take the time to stop and do something for someone in need.  The postal worker could have thought, ‘I’m at work.  I don’t have time to stop.  I might get in trouble with my boss if I don’t stay on task.’  Instead, he was thinking about someone other than himself.  By doing so, he saved someone’s life.  That’s a really heroic thing to do.

Can you say you would have done the same? I’m not sure I would have.  Even though I’ve had CPR training as a teacher, would I remember what to do in an emergency situation?  I’m not sure.

This story also made me wonder whether Dillon had to pull the man out of the street before he started or whether he just hoped cars would stop.  Either way, it was really brave.

You know my dad was a postal worker for 30 years, and my husband is a FedEx delivery driver.  These guys work hard, and I’m glad to see that for once, they’re getting some positive press.

Jokes:

1. I bought some Forever stamps, but given the problems at the post office, I don’t think they have an infinite stick life.

2. One good thing about email is it doesn’t require any stamps.

Advice:  Because we’re all connected, when you help someone else, you’re actually helping yourself.

Let me know whether you like joke 1 or 2 or neither one.  Maybe you have a better post office joke you’d like to share?  Let me know!
