The Good News Is…
Over the weekend I went to see the movie American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story. You can check out the official trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6rn-6lKBJ8. I loved this movie, and so do most people who go to see it to the tune of about 97%.
Now you might watch the trailer and say to yourself, “Oh, it’s a movie about football. I don’t really like football, so this movie isn’t for me.” But you would be wrong. This movie is about relationships and how important they are. This movie is about pursuing your dream and how important that is. This movie is about supporting the people you love, even in the tough times. So I would argue that it isn’t really so much a movie about football but about overcoming obstacles.
Ironically, over the weekend, in three out of four of the playoff football games on TV, the underdog won. I rooted for every one of those underdog teams. Why? What is it about underdogs that we love so much? I think maybe it’s because somewhere deep down each one of us sees ourselves as an underdog. We doubt if we have what it takes to make it and to live our dreams. So when we see someone else do it, we believe that it just might be possible for ourselves as well.
One of my favorite sports clips is of an obscure college women’s relay finish. You can view it here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/inspired-life/wp/2016/04/19/unbelievable-watch-this-irish-runners-stunning-comeback-victory/ You have to watch it more than once to see how far from behind the girl is who ends up winning the race. What heart! She ran as hard as she could; she gave her all, and she won. I think we all want to believe that’s possible. Maybe if we give our all we can also win.
I once coached girl’s cross country. In our first race of the year, one of my girls came in second place. I know some people think that second place is the first loser, but this girl lost one of her shoes during the race and kept running. She finished with a swollen foot full of burrs. How many of us would have continued that race? Often we give up when the going gets hard, but we have to persevere. That’s the only real way to win in life!
*Joke: It’s so cold, I had to go into a walk-in freezer just to thaw out.
