Superbowl Sunday

So here we are again; it’s Superbowl Sunday.  In the past, I haven’t really been much for Superbowl parties.  In fact, I’ve never hosted one and don’t ever remember attending one.  But this year is a little different.  Unfortunately, my beloved Cowboys aren’t in it.  They were eliminated in the first round yet again.  Luckily, my husband is from Kansas City, so we have someone to root for.  Actually, I’ve always liked Kansas City.  When I was a kid my favorite teams were ranked as follows: 1) Dallas Cowboys  2) Miami Dolphins. 3) Kansas City Chiefs.  Another good reason to root for Kansas City is that San Francisco embarrassed the Cowboys in a loss the earlier in the year.

So what are my big Superbowl plans?  My husband and I are going to my parents house.  We already go every other weekend to play 42.  That’s a domino game we’ve been playing since I was a kid.  And since my husband introduced me to the card game Spades, I realize that 42 is sort of the domino version of that card game.

We usually go to play 42 on Saturday morning, but we decided to go this week on Sunday afternoon and combine our game with watching the Superbowl.  We rarely watch football with dad.  We only did so once this year on Christmas Eve when we recorded the game, and he came over to watch it our house because he couldn’t watch it live at his house due to our family Christmas Eve tradition of reading stories, singing carols, and opening presents.

He likes to watch games live, and we like to record them so that we can fast forward through commercials and replay things we want to see again.  So why are we joining him for the game live this year?  Well, just recently we were told that my Dad’s prostate cancer could have moved into a bone in his back.  And that got me to realizing that my time left with my dad could be limited.

Of course I know that nobody lives forever, but somehow I pushed that to the back of my mind.  Realizing that my dad may not be around too much longer makes me want to maximize the time I spend with him.  He’s the one who taught me to love sports and who answered my incessant questions about the rules of various sports.  Now I understand most sports.  Soccer is my favorite one to play, but football is my favorite one to watch.

No matter who wins the Superbowl today, it will be great to spend the time with my parents and make some memories.  My dad is really a great guy, and I’m really lucky to have him for my father.  Not everybody is so fortunate.  He enfolded me with unconditional love my whole life, and because of that, I have become someone who knows how to love unconditionally.

Joke:  Why don’t you ever see any football players wearing glasses?  Because it’s a contact sport.  (https://www.weareteachers.com/football-jokes/)

Quote:  My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person: he believed in me” – Jim Valvano

Advice:  When you’ve got a great parent, spend as much time with them as possible.  They won’t be here forever.
